This section highlights and reviews important developments published within the past year regarding the stomach and duodenum. The lone returning topic is my chapter titled Gastric secretion. New chapters include Gastroduodenal mucosal defense by Drs Mamie Dong and Jonathan Kaunitz, pp. 599–606, Peptic ulcer disease by Japie Louw, pp. 607–611, Upper gastrointestinal bleeding by Drs Noel Martins and Wahid Wassef, pp. 612–619, Helicobacter pylori and gastric cancer by Drs D. Mark Pritchard and Jean Crabtree, pp. 620–625, Regulation of food intake by gastrointestinal hormones by Drs Kevin Baynes, Waljit Dhillo, and Stephen Bloom, pp. 626–631 and Gastroduodenal disorders of childhood by Drs Gayle Horvitz and Benjamin Gold. It is hoped that these focused reviews will assist clinicians and scientists in keeping up-to-date with rapid progress in the areas of gastroduodenal physiology, disease, and therapy.
