The Association of Academic Physiatrists has announced an additional category of “Best Platform Paper Presentations” during the 1998 AAP Annual Meeting, February 18 to 22, at the Hyatt Riverwalk Hotel in San Antonio, Texas.
Platform Paper Presentations are being expanded to feature three “Best Platform Paper Presentations,” one for each of the following categories: (1) medical student; (2) resident or fellow; (3) young faculty member. Through this effort, the AAP hopes to encourage young researches and strengthen all investigation in the field of PM&R. These papers will be presented in addition to the K-12 Grant papers and other AAP platform papers.
Those submitting papers must be: (1) a medical student mentored by faculty in a PM&R department; (2) a resident or fellow in PM&R; (3) a young faculty member in PM&R having less than five years postresidency training. The content of the submitted paper must be original research relevant to the domain of PM&R (literature reviews and descriptive case studies are not eligible for these awards). It must have clearly stated hypotheses, appropriate research methodology and data analysis, and valid conclusions. The investigation described in the paper must have been completed before the submission.
To enter the competition for the Best Platform Paper Presentation Award, presenters must complete and submit the regular Paper and Poster Abstract Application (including the short abstract), along with a more detailed summary of the work, which should be no longer than 1,000 words. This longer manuscript must include a brief literature-based rationale for the study, a description of the subjects, methods, data analysis, a summary of the results, and conclusions. Bulleted or outlined formats of presentation are acceptable, as long as they are clear and address the above content. All materials must be received at the AAP National Office by October 24, 1997.
The AAP Program Committee and the AAP Research Committee will meet concurrently to review submissions this fall during the AAPM&R Annual Assembly. The Program Committee will review the regular Paper and Poster Abstract Applications (including short abstracts) without seeing the Best Platform Paper Presentation Award Applications or the longer award-related 1,000-word summaries and will make overall decisions about which abstracts merit presentation at the AAP Annual Meeting. The Research Committee will separately review the Best Platform Paper Presentation Award Applications (including the 1,000-word summaries) to determine which, if any, should be selected for the Award.
Winning presenters will be awarded a complimentary registration for the AAP Annual Meeting, on-site hotel room for one night, and a $500.00 honorarium. Winners will be notified by December 1, 1997.
