Apoptosis and necrosis are the final manifestations of intestinal epithelial injury. The protective role of heat shock proteins(HSPs) in the cellular response to stress is well-known. Specific mechanisms by which HSPs prevent apoptosis are poorly characterized, but involve mitochondria as initiators of the apoptotic cascade.
