Surfactant protein-A (SP-A), a member of the Ca-dependent lectin family expressed in the lung, enhances uptake of various bacteria by alveolar macrophages in vitro and in vivo. Alveolar macrophages from SP-A gene inactivated mice (SP-A−/−) phagocytose bacteria less efficiently than wild type macrophages. Class A scavenger receptors (SR) bind and mediate phagocytosis of bacteria.
