Excerpt
Many antecedent, clinically mild, viral infections can predispose the host to subsequent severe bacterial infections resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. IFNαand IFNγare induced during most viral infections and can potentiate LPS- induced cytokine production and lethality in animal models. The mechanisms by which antiviral cytokines modulate hyper- responsiveness to LPS are unclear. We examined the impact of IFNs on key LPS signaling molecules including TLR-4/MD-2 expression and elements of the NFκB pathway.
