This News Briefs is inspired by the outstanding article by Hittel et al. (3) in the January 2007 issue of Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews (ESSR), "Proteomics and Systems Biology in Exercise and Sport Sciences Research." Their brief review laid out in technical but understandable terms what modern or, rather, contemporary genomic (i.e., working with gene (DNA) transcripts produced in a cell or organism) and proteomics (i.e., working with proteins produced in a cell or organism) research has to offer in understanding the cellular events in health and disease, and how physical exercise can modify those events in adipose, muscle, and other cells. With reference to the primary citations, Hittel et al. (3) told us about some of their research results; however, more than that, they told us about new ways of thinking that the new technology allows. The ramifications are far reaching. We, individually and collectively, need to think about those ramifications.
