Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) are becoming active in home care. Schooled in assessment, diagnosis, and intervention, these nurses write thousands of prescriptions daily. These ever-expanding roles require APNs to be informed and knowledgeable about medications and therapeutic pharmacology. This drug handbook will be a welcome companion in practice for the busy APN.
The book provides a maximum amount of information in a concise format. The text provides sections related to safe prescription writing, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, pharmacotherapeutics, patient factors that influence drug therapy, and patient education for management of common side effects. Each individual drug monograph is arranged alphabetically by generic name.
Extensive cross-referencing is provided by U.S., Canadian, and Mexican brand names and synonyms. Abbreviated monographs contain unique information, commonly for combination formulations, and a cross-reference to the corresponding individual entity monographs. A Controlled Substance Index and Pharmacologic Category Index are provided to assist the APN in appropriate drug choices. The Appendix contains information including conversion laboratory information, definitions of specific adverse reactions, and a list of drugs associated with: specific reactions, comparison charts for selected classes of drugs, maternal and fetal guidelines, OBRA recommendations for long-term care, toxicology information, and treatment guidelines for selected therapy.
This book was named as a 1999 AJN Book of the Year and would be a valuable addition to any library even if it only contained the introduction and Appendix. Combined with the detailed drug information included, it is an invaluable text for the home care generalist and advanced practitioner.
