Over 40 home health nursing experts are actively working on this project. The project is providing an opportunity for home health nurses to demonstrate their knowledge and expertise and to show that home health truly is a specialty practice. The core is divided into four sections: Program management, concepts and models, clinical management, and trends and issues. Each chapter within each of the four sections is supported by the current literature and evidence-and research-based best practices.
The core curriculum will initially be published at different times to ensure that the content remains current. The timetable for publication is:
Section 1—Program Management: (January, 2001) Section 1 sets the framework for basic home care orientation programs.
Section 2—Concepts and Models: (Spring, 2001) Section 2 covers theoretical concepts and models relating to home care.
Section 3—Clinical Management: (Winter, 2001) Section 3 will attempt to document how the care of patients with common health problems is adapted to the home setting and how environmental considerations impact nursing care.
Section 4—Trends and Issues: (Fall, 2001) Covers current trends and hot topics and predicts the future of home care.
Particularly in light of PPS and its associated changes, the core curriculum should be a testament to others in the healthcare professions that home health nurses adapt their practice to change and use outcomes and research to keep the profession dynamic and current. The core is also a testament to the incredible experience of each individual nurse and of the combined effort of many nurses to document what we do and how we do it.
