Fungal infections of the orbit represent a small minority of orbital infections. However, because of the virulent nature of some fungal species, such infections can cause devastating damage to surrounding tissues and often can lead to blindness and death. Additionally, fungal infections may mimic other types of infections or inflammatory conditions, potentially causing a delay in diagnosis and an increase in both morbidity and mortality. Finally, recent trends have shown an increased frequency of fungal infections overall in the United States.1–3
For these reasons, ophthalmologists should have a competent working knowledge of orbital fungal infections. This should include familiarity with the most common fungi, the risks factors for infection, and a thorough understanding of disease presentation, diagnosis, and appropriate treatment.
