AOP Medical, a division of Astro Office Products, Inc., which is a subsidiary of Canon USA, has introduced a paper film imaging system called PF-PACS™ (Paper Film-Picture Archiving & Communication System). This technology eliminates the need for x-ray film in the digital world of the magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography scans, and can be applied to any other digitized medical image as well. The system, which has been under development for several years, is a clinically tested turn-key system that was designed to meet the needs of radiologists and other physicians, while improving diagnostic accuracy for the patient and significantly lowering costs for hospitals and imaging centers. This system will have far-reaching implications for national health care cost containment.
PF-PACS is the step into future for digital medical imaging. It eliminates the costs and diagnostic limitations inherent in systems that depend upon x-ray film for MRI and CT scans, as well as all other digital imaging technologies. This system combines the latest, best and most reliable computer software and hardware with a Canon Color Laser Copier to speed up diagnosis, annotation, reporting of results, paper printout and DAT archival storage.
PF-PACS can be a stand-alone system, or it can be networked into a hospital's information system. Its diagnostic images can be sent by modem to other locations, so that a second opinion from another expert can easily be added and stored with a patient's records. The images can also be viewed on a Mac or PC, just much more slowly than on the Sun workstation that is part of this AOP Medical system. A physician can therefore view the images on his office or home computer. Figure
