Excerpt

The hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a lymphotrophic and hepatotrophic RNA virus that has been linked to the development of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (1). Infection with hepatitis C is strongly associated with essential mixed cryoglobulinemia, an autoimmune disorder of unknown etiology, that can on occasion transform into B-cell lymphoma (2,3,4). Recently, there have been reports of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas complicating the course of chronic HCV infection suggesting this virus may play a role in malignant lymphoproliferation (5). To our knowledge, we report the first case of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) that developed in patient with cirrhosis due to HCV.
