The second edition of the meeting on “Probiotics, Prebiotics, and New Foods” confirmed the great scientific interest in the topic. In 2 clinic statements regarding the treatment and prevention of rotavirus diarrhea in children and the reduction of antibiotic-associated side effects, we can demonstrate good evidence of efficacy of probiotics. Both the applications of molecular biology and of microassays to the study of relationships between bacteria and intestinal mucosa have opened new interesting research fields. Some of the topics were discussed during the meeting and we hope we will be able to meet again with the researchers and the clinicians interested in these topics in Rome, Italy, September 2005.
