Abstract
Background:Hypertension is prevalent in China but control is low. Community intervention is an effective way of preventing and controlling hypertension. Telephone and network remote education is a new way of intervention.
Objective:To evaluate the intervention effects of telephone and network remote health education on middle-aged and elderly hypertensive people in central China.
Methods:Eighty hundred and eighty-three hypertensive patients were selected from central China in 2008 and randomly divided into remote health educational care (EC) and usual care (UC) groups. We provided hypertensive patients in EC group with individualized health education by telephone and network. They were followed at 3-month intervals up to 5 years.
Results:At baseline, EC and UC groups were similar for age, sex, body mass index, blood pressure levels, and pharmacologic treatment. After 5 year health education intervention, the awareness rate (61.4% vs 100%), treatment rate (36.1% vs 79.2%) and control rate (16% vs 59.6%) of EC group were increased, and were higher than those (79.3%, 41.8%, 21.5%) in UC group. The blood pressure of EC group were decreased significantly, and was lower than that in UC group. Patients in the EC group had significantly reduced drinking and increased physical activity, and the smoking and overweight had no significant difference. The incidence of cardiovascular events (8.5% vs 14.6%) was found to be significantly lower in the EC group.
Conclusion:Telephone and network remote health education to middle-aged and elderly hypertension can control hypertension effectively, decrease the incidence of cardio-cerebrovascular complication.
