Abstract

Objective:

Hypertension is a major health problem in both developed and developing countries. Despite national and international guidelines and initiatives for hypertension, many studies have found that around two thirds of people with hypertension are either untreated or inadequately controlled. The purpose of this study is to identify the attitude of hypertension management among Korean middle aged using Q Methodology, and to propose strategies to improve blood pressure control.

Design and Method:

Data were collected from 19 middle aged by allowing them to classify 38 Q statements related to hypertension management and processed using the PC QUANL program.

Results:

The perceptions of hypertension management by Korean middle aged were categorized into 3 types: ‘medication focused type,’ ‘stress management type’ and ‘diet-exercise focused type.’

Conclusions:

Based on the types of hypertension management of Korean middle aged classified in this study, repeated and individualized education program to emphasize the importance of reaching target blood pressure values and lifestyle modifications will help to prevent disease complications.
