Ethics Casebook of the American Psychoanalytic Association. Second Edition
Paul A. Dewald, and Rita W. Clark (Eds) (2007) New York: American Psychoanalytic Association. xxx + 109 pp.
This small volume, a product of contemporary organized psychoanalysis, and addressed primarily to psychoanalysts, is relevant to the work of other practicing mental health clinicians. Its vignettes and discussions touch upon most of the issues arising between a therapist and patient who share the unique extended but limited intimacy of the consulting room. Some of the more prominent concerns for which it offers guidance are the competence of the aging or mentally ill clinician; confidentiality, especially in the scientific reporting of clinical cases; sexual and nonsexual (as in regard to fees or gifts) boundary issues; relationships with colleagues and students; and representing the profession to the public.
