Nursing leaders in traditional hospital settings are facing hard choices as managed-care reforms continue to funnel patients away from acute care institutions. The current and projected decline in employment opportunities for nurse managers in hospitals has resulted in increased interest in management opportunities in other sectors of the healthcare system. Information regarding the educational skills and experiential requirements for these alternative positions are incomplete. Following is a brief description of the situation regarding educational requirements and preferences for administrative positions in one sector, physician group practices. As a response to healthcare changes, physician movement into groups has increased. The practice administrator's role has gained importance as needs to negotiate contracts and terms with third-party payers and to manage larger and more complex staffs within practices have grown.
