Excerpt

Formation of intestinal villi from undifferentiated endodermal epithelium requires tightly regulated processes of cell growth and differentiation. The molecular signaling that regulates theses processes is currently unknown. The target of rapamycin (TOR) is a key regulator of cell growth and proliferation, integrating both extracellular growth cues and intracellular nutrient status. TOR mediates cellular growth via signaling to p70 S6 kinase (p70S6K) and 4E-BP1, resulting in the translation of proteins required for various anabolic functions.
