Jejunal Adenocarcinoma: A Rare Cause of Chronic Anemia in Children
Brad A Pasternak; Abha Kaistha
Excerpt
Small intestine malignancies are rare in adults, with an incidence of 0.7 to 1.7/100,000 (1). They are even rarer in the pediatric age group. Because the onset of symptoms in small bowel malignancy is usually gradual, the condition is usually advanced at the time of diagnosis, and the prognosis is poor. We describe an adolescent female presenting with chronic anemia and abdominal pain who had a jejunal adenocarcinoma. Only eight cases of jejunal adenocarcinoma have been reported in patients under 20 years of age (2,3).
