Excerpt
Vibrio vulnificus is a Gram-negative rod-shaped bacteria found in warm coastal waters and known to cause fatal sepsis in patients with end-stage liver disease (ESLD) (1). Sepsis with this organism predominantly afflicts boys and men and older individuals. Only 8 pediatric cases have been documented (2,3). We describe herein the course of a 12-year-old boy with hepatitis C virus infection who contracted V vulnificus by wading in US Gulf Coast waters.
