A group of fifty-five players in the Canadian Football League (CFL) completed a survey regarding current and previous usage of smokeless tobacco(ST) as well as current use of smoking tobacco products and alcohol consumption. The purpose of this study was to establish baseline prevalence rates for ST and alcohol usage as well as smoking tobacco products. Association between nicotine and alcohol use was investigated. Among those athletes, 88% had never smoked while 65% had never used ST. Only 12% of the CFL players smoked while current ST usage was 22% and current alcohol use was 75%. Significant associations were established between those who drink alcohol and those who previously used or are currently using ST (P=.011), as well as among those athletes who currently drink alcoholic beverages and those who are currently ST users (P=.020). This study concludes that the use of smokeless tobacco among this group of CFL players was notable. Additionally, a significant association between the consumption of alcohol and the use of smokeless tobacco was established.
