Abstract 1937
Twenty female (F) and 20 male (M) runners ran, in random order, the following standard track distances: 800m, 1500m, 3km, 5km and 10km on separate days on a 400m track. All runs were all-out and run individually or in groups of two or three. The means for physical characteristics, lactate threshold (LT) and VO2max during treadmill tests were as follows: F - age=32.8yr, wt=55.8kg, %fat=13.3, LT=47.2ml-kg/min, VO2max=57.4ml-kg/min; M - age=33.2 yr, wt=74kg, %fat=8.7, LT=51.4ml-kg/min, VO2max=63.1ml-kg/min. The mean velocities for the runs, as listed above, fell in a curvilinear pattern. The velocities for F were 289, 275.4, 257.5, 251.7 and 240.2 m/min, while the velocities for M were 328, 309.2, 286.6, 273.4 and 259.6 m/min. There were no gender differences (p>0.05) in the correlations for LT from 1500m to 10km for F (r = .81, .86, .87 and .81), and for M (r = .77, .84, .85, and .85). Moreover, LT was equally effective in predicting performance for the above distances, as the SEE for F and M ranged from 0.18 to 0.22 min/km for 800m to 10km. However, The coefficients for VO2max and performance were higher (p<0.05) for the F (r = .75, .80 and .77) compared to M (r = .52, .53 and .50) for the 3km, 5km and 10km, respectively. Furthermore, the correlations for VO2max for 1500m to 10km for F predicted performance as well as LT (p>0.05). This was not the case for M, as only 25% of the variance in performance was predicted from aerobic capacity. It was concluded that these data suggest there were no gender differences in LT prediction of performance from 1500m to 10km, and LT is equally accurate for the latter events. It is further concluded that VO2max is as accurate a predictor as LT for the 3km to 10km for F, but gender differences exist for VO2max as it was only moderately accurate (r = .52) for the M runners.
