DESCRIPTION: This second edition deals with clinical aspects of disorders and injuries of the musculoskeletal system. PURPOSE: The purpose is to help the primary care physician recognize and treat, wherever possible, orthopedic conditions. This objective is most worthy and is met by the qualified contributors. The editors are all from the Department of Orthopaedics at UMASS Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, Massachusetts. AUDIENCE: The book is written primarily for primary care physicians. FEATURES: It is broken down into anatomical regions. Each chapter covers anatomy, the physical examination, and the disorders and injuries of the region. Pediatric and general topics are also well covered. Illustrations are used extensively and effectively. The organization and flow of each chapter makes for easy reading and the book is at an appropriate educational level for primary care physicians. ASSESSMENT: There are a growing number of medical specialties that want to increase their share of patients presented with musculoskeletal complaints. A lot of this redistribution of medical care is driven by economic constraints. It is the responsibility of the orthopedic academies and their fellows to assist these practitioners wherever possible without placing the patient's care in jeopardy. The editors are to be highly commended for taking on this challenge. All primary care physicians are encouraged to purchase this work.
