In spinal cord-injured individuals (SCI), loss of supraspinal control of somatic efferents and the subsequent extreme deconditioning of leg muscles appears to be associated with vascular adaptations. The previously observed increase in basal leg vascular tone in SCI may be due to structural vascular changes. However, functional vascular adaptions, like for example a blunted endothelial release of nitric oxide (NO), form an alternative explanation.
