Rowing performance depends on the rowers' ability to develop and maintain a high average shell velocity. The force applied to the blade by the rowers and the synchrony between the rowers' kinematics and kinetics directly affects shell velocity. A novel system was designed to quantify blade force, rower position, and shell velocity during on-water rowing for the purposes of (1) allowing impartial and consistent measurement of an athlete's performance and (2) identifying the most efficient rower pairings.
