A premise for reliable calculation of alveolar gas exchange in breath-by-breath (BBB) analysis is that the delay time (TD) is correct to align the flow and concentration signals. TD consists of the time needed to replace instrumental dead space (TVDi) of the flowmeter, the gas transit time in the sample capillary and the dynamic response time of the analyzer.
