Epidemiologic evidence suggests fitness level is the best predictor of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in men and women. Direct measurement of VO2max is the most accurate measure of cardiovascular fitness level. Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) is the number one killer of men and women in the U.S. and coronary CT calcification scores (CT-Ca) have been shown to predict cardiovascular (CV) events in adults. It has previously been shown that CT-Ca seems to identify early atherosclerosis even in patients with low to intermediate risk for CHD. Whether cardiovascular fitness level predicts CT-Ca scores or is protective against the calcification process in atherosclerosis is yet to be determined. The purpose of this study was to assess whether VO2max correlates with CT-Ca scores in healthy adults.
