Electronic Publishing and Nursing Research
Excerpt
Electronic communication is changing how information is retrieved and disseminated and is having an impact on the conduct and communication of research. Information previously only available in hard copy is rapidly becoming available and preferable in electronic format. The scope of information published electronically suggests its potential to change research as we know it today. Some nurses have already integrated electronic publishing in their research. For others, this article provides an overview of possibilities. This article will assist nurses in taking advantage of the opportunities and minimizing the limitations of electronic publishing, especially on the World Wide Web (WWW or Web).
Newspapers and magazines are commonly available on the Web. Detailed financial market research information, including real-time activity, is available at numerous Websites. Abstracts of dissertations and masters' theses are on the Web and CD-ROM (see http://www.umi.com/hp/Support/DExplorer/products/). There are hundreds of electronic journals (see http://www.library.tufts.edu/hsl/ejsubjct.html) and electronic magazines, or ezines, in the health sciences (http://www.dominis.com/Zines/ByCategory/Medical/). Table 1 lists electronic nursing journals and ezines and their Uniform Resource Locators (URLs).
