Empathy Can Be Learned

Abstract

Described here is an effective program design to raise empathy levels of helpers. It is the result of outcome research with nurses. Based on the human relations training approach, the program incorporates didactic instruction, experiential learning, modeling, rehearsal, feedback, and imagery. The Empathy Training Program is outlined and discussed, and references are provided for the materials and exercises used in training.
