Staffing remains at the very core of effective patient care. Research findings continue to support the positive impact of adequate nurse staffing on patient care, the work environment, and job satisfaction. St. Joseph's/ Candler (SJ/C) a two- hospital system in Savannah, Ga., faced a 14% vacancy rate, and the difficult realization that its Magnet nurses were floating to work at neighboring hospitals to fill vacant shifts—all while SJ/C relied on shift bonus, contract labor, and overtime. This was a wake-up call to create a more engaged workforce to help ensure safe, cost-effective, and efficient staffing patterns.
