At present there are no vaccines for human parasitic infections, and the scientific knowledge necessary to develop antiparasitic drugs remains rudimentary because the mechanisms of action of most of these drugs are poorly understood. Nevertheless new agents that are effective against certain parasitic diseases have been developed in recent years; this review focuses on these newer modalities as well as on those older drugs that have recently been found to be effective against certain parasites. “Classic” parasitic and antimalaria therapy is not discussed.
