The classical method for detecting CMV is visualization of cytopathic effects of the virus in tissue specimens. This observation of "cytomegally" was the basis of the name of the virus and remains useful to the clinical pathologist for making the diagnosis of CMV infection. Currently, the most reliable methods for diagnosis of CMV infection are rapid culture, antigen detection, and DNA detection. Measurement of antibodies to CMV is less useful in the immunosuppressed patient but has a role in selected circumstances.
