Benjamin F. Boyd, MD, DSc (Hon), FACS, Editor-in-Chief. 565 pp., Panama, Highlights of Ophthalmology International, 2002.
For decades, the Highlights of Ophthalmology journals and books, edited by Ben Boyd, have provided readers with a series of beautifully illustrated and written reviews of contemporary topics in ophthalmology. This latest publication, coedited by Samuel Boyd and (for the English edition) Robert Drews, is an excellent review of currently important diagnostic and therapeutic topics regarding posterior segment disorders.
Forty-eight contributing authors have produced a textbook consisting of 9 sections containing 38 chapters. These include Diagnostic Techniques (6 chapters), Practical Aspects of Laser Photocoagulation (3 chapters), The Leading Achievements in Vitreoretinal Surgery (1 chapter), Essential Elements for Successful Vitreoretinal Surgery (2 chapters), Retinal Vascular Diseases (7 chapters), Macular Diseases (8 chapters), Retinal Detachment Surgery (2 chapters), Management of Complex Cases (6 chapters), and Management of Complications (3 chapters).
In addition to the superb color drawings (now copyrighted) that readers associate with the Highlights, this publication contains a large number of excellent photographs, particularly in the first section and in chapters devoted to topics in medical retina. The chapters vary significantly in depth to which various subjects are explored, but most chapters are very well referenced.
This publication should be most useful for those ophthalmologists and students who are relatively inexperienced in the subspecialties of medical and surgical vitreoretinal disorders. Nevertheless, the high quality illustrations and writing should benefit even experienced individuals who are interested in a review of a particular topic. Retinal and Vitreoretinal Surgery is highly recommended and should be included in the collections of all who are involved in the training of residents and medical students.
