Summary Statement: Safety of Bone Morphogenetic Proteins for Spine Fusion

Abstract

As any new technology approaches widespread clinical use, the safety profile must be of paramount concern. This article reviews the available safety data for the various bone morphogenetic protein programs. On the basis of available information, each BMP requires its own safety profile of local, regional, and systemic side effects. When used properly, BMPs currently appear to be extremely safe for spine fusion.
