A new assay for the measurement of gentamicin in patient serum has been developed by Chiron Diagnostics for use on the automated ACS:180 instrument. The purpose of this study was to assess the analytical performance of this assay and ensure that it produced clinical results comparable to those produced by currently available methods. The analytical performance was assessed by analyzing both controls supplied by the manufacturer and commercially available controls. Within run coefficients of variation (CV) were less than 12% for all controls. The results obtained for between run precision are shown below: Table 1
Patient specimens (n=100) were evaluated by the ACS:180 assay and results 4were compared to those obtained by both the Syva EMIT and the Abbott AxSym methods. Excellent correlations were observed between all 3 assays with the following regression equations: ACS = 0.90AxSym + 0.15 (r=0.99); ACS = 0.85EMIT + 0.34 (r=0.99). These results demonstrate that the ACS:180 assay exhibits acceptable precision and comparable clinical results. The ACS:180 system also has random access capabilities allowing for improved efficiency in the clinical laboratory.
