Significant morbidity with intracarotid (IC) papaverine treatment of vasospasm suggests the need for alternative drugs. IC verapamil and nicardipine both augment cerebral blood flow (CBF) of human subjects and have been anecdotally used to treat cerebral vasospasm after sub arachnoid hemorrhage. We compared the effects of IC verapamil and nicardipine on CBF on New Zealand White rabbits and the ability of these drugs to non-specifically reverse topical endothelin-1 (ET-1) triggered vasospasm.
