S49 IMAGING DOPAMINE ACTIVITY IN FUNCTIONAL SUBDIVISION OF THE STRIATUM WITH PET: CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS
Excerpt
The human striatum is functionally organized into limbic, associative and sensorimotor subdivisions, which process information related to emotional, cognitive and motor function. Dopamine (DA) projections ascending from the midbrain provide important modulatory input to these striatal subregions.
Recent progress in resolution in PET imaging now enables us to measure DA function in various subregions of the striatum. This presentation will illustrate the benefit of this new opportunity, by presenting data on DA function in substance abuse, alcoholism, major depression and schizophrenia.
