Abstract

Summary:

Total hip replacement is the treatment of choice for advanced osteonecrosis of the hip (University of Pennsylvania Stages IVB–VIC). Total hip replacement provides excellent pain relief and functional improvements for patients with advanced osteonecrosis; however, long-term prosthesis survivorship has traditionally been inferior in younger and more active individuals compared with total hip replacement for osteoarthrosis. With improvements in prosthetic designs, more recent outcomes have been more favorable, and comparable to the outcomes for patients with osteoarthrosis at intermediate-term follow up.
