Reviewer's Expert Opinion:
Description: This book succeeds admirably in its aim to provide a comprehensive guide to all aspects of hospital epidemiology and infection control. The editor has gathered a formidable group of leaders in the field to author the various chapters. Purpose: Both theoretic and practical information is presented to help all those working in the field. While providing a broad overview, it is also detailed enough to serve as a daily reference resource. Audience: Although designed for physicians and infection control practitioners who are involved with infection control on a daily basis, this book can also be used by other physicians, nurses, students, and medical administrators who need information on specific topics. Features: The book covers a wide variety of topics including both clinical subjects (nosocomial infections) and all aspects of infection control, including such topics as waste management, sterilization issues, environmental issues, and epidemiology. The latter include such specialized areas as infection control in long-term care facilities and the home healthcare setting. New to this edition are sections on new techniques to prevent medical errors, bioterrorism, and recent emerging infections. Most chapters make judicious use of tables which help to bring topics into focus. The relatively few figures are well reproduced. Particularly useful are the comprehensive references provided in tables throughout the book and at chapter ends. Assessment: This book stands as an authoritative reference. All who work in the field of infection control will find it invaluable in their work.
