Salivary immunoglobulin (IgA) concentrations have been shown to decrease after episodes of intense exercise in groups of high performance athletes, and low concentrations of salivary IgA are associated with an increased risk for respiratory illness. 1 It has also been suggested that decreases in salivary IgA may provide a mechanism for monitoring overtraining. 2–4 This case report presents data on the application of salivary immunoglobulin monitoring in managing an individual elite kayaker who was prone to recurrent debilitating respiratory illness that interfered with training and preparations for competitions.
