This year's American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Distinguished Career Award recipient is Dr. Bea Lampkin, Professor Emeritus at the University of Cincinnati and Children's Hospital Medical Center. Drs. Mauer and Lukens have written two congratulatory pieces in this issue of the Journal of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology espousing Dr. Lampkin's contributions and charisma. Whereas there are many wonderful individuals in our field with strength, insight, determination, commitment, caring, and resplendent hope, Dr. Lampkin epitomizes the best of the best. When I moved from Boston to Cincinnati, I asked Bea to promise that she would stay in the Division of Hematology/Oncology and continue to participate in ways that she thought best. Her decision was to continue to teach fellows in the ways of the microscope, morphology, and patient management. I also made a promise to myself that she would always have an office in the Division as long as I was there. Bea stayed where she was and “we all,” not just the fellows, benefited greatly from her guidance and teaching. When I decided to move back to Johns Hopkins, Bea was there again with both encouragement and some melancholy. It has always struck me just how deeply she cares not only for the patients and families but also for her colleagues trying to make their own contributions to the field. Many colleagues have known Bea longer than I have, but none have had a closer working relationship. This award gives us a wonderful opportunity to celebrate with Bea her many contributions to the children and families for whom she has cared as well as to those of us whom she has nurtured professionally. There will be an award presentation at the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology annual meeting in Baltimore on Thursday, April 26.
