The fifth edition of Cancer Treatment, edited by Charles M. Haskell, is a textbook of medical oncology aimed at the practicing medical oncologist. Thus, in addition to providing a series of individual drug monographs, explicit recommendations are made in regard to the management of specific cancers. There are useful sections on supportive care issues and a thoughtful chapter on clinical trial design.
The book acknowledges the tremendous impact that our increasing understanding of the biology of tumor cells is having on the field of medical oncology by extensively revising sections on cancer biology, genetic counseling, and cancer prevention and screening. Overall, it is well organized into 22 parts, which provide easy reference access to information. Though this book is not a must for a reference library, it will be a welcome additional reference to trainees in medical oncology and to the practicing medical oncologist.
