The article by Healey and Mitchell in the January/February 2008 issue of the Journal of Glaucoma is beautifully done. The authors are to be congratulated.
They point out that optic disc pits are rare. They have defined the prevalence of these, as well as their clinical significance, and that is a major accomplishment for a rare finding. Their final comment, “Peripheral optic disc pits…were invariably associated with fixation threatening OAG…” This is important and I hope will be widely recognized.
Among their 108 patients with open-angle glaucoma, around 3% had optic pits. Though infrequent, ophthalmologists should make a major effort to evaluate discs for the presence of this highly specific sign.
