The Intensive Care Unit: Activities of the Anesthesiologist as a Perioperative Consultant
Elizabeth Cordes Behringer
Excerpt
Eight hundred fifty-five anesthesiologists possess American Board of Anesthesiology special certification in Critical Care Medicine nationwide as of June 1999. However, many practicing anesthesiologists without specific critical care specialization are frequently involved in the perioperative care of patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). Perioperative consultation in the ICU occurs in a myriad of settings, including preoperative evaluation, management of the airway, ventilator, and pain, and ICU-based procedures such as central line placement.
