I am writing this Letter to the Editor in regards to two things printed in the July 2005 issue of the Journal of Lower Genital Tract Disease that were inappropriate and in error. First, an abstract of an article I wrote along with Dr. Schellhase with regard to colposcopic proficiency (pp. 195-196 of the Journal) was followed by a commentary. The commentary was not accompanied by any reviewer's initials, which was perhaps not surprising considering the antagonistic, derogatory, and unprofessional stance taken by the reviewer(s). The comment stated that "a little mathematics" was used-I would tend to agree with that. It was just enough to show that numbers can be used to prove anything, even if the commentator is wrong. The article dealt with the patients seen by a single colposcopist. Patients seen by 2 other colposcopists at our site were not included in the "math" done by the reviewer, leading them to the inaccurate assumption that residents at our program have insufficient numbers for training our residents in colposcopy. It also assumed that all residents at our program train in colposcopy-this is also not the case. This training is an elective experience, leading to a concentration of colposcopic procedures for a small number of residents interested in incorporating colposcopy into their practice. I found the comments demeaning and certainly not in keeping with the ASCCPs goal to "…improve health care through the …study of lowergenital tract disease."
Second, Dr. K.G. Schellhase and I were listed as co-authors for an article on VIA by Goel et al. (p. 196 of the journal). We had no involvement with any such article.
