Abstract

PURPOSE.To discuss the concept of spirituality as it applies to nursing care in general and specifically in regard to the dying patient.DATA SOURCES.Published articles, books.DATA SYNTHESIS.Although it is sometimes difficult for nurses to incorporate a spiritual assessment and interventions into their practice, it is important for patients that this dimension not be ignored, particularly in end-of-life care.CONCLUSIONS.Spiritual care must be addressed in nursing practice and incorporated into an interdisciplinary plan of care.IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING PRACTICE.Nurses can improve their skills in assessment of patients' spiritual dimension, as well as implementation of interventions to facilitate spiritual growth for themselves and their patients.
