"In 1986, the Hospice Organization of Southern California sponsored the Third Western Hospice Nursing Conference, which drew people not only from California but from across the country. As the conference proceeded it became clear that most of those present felt a very definite need for mutual support. Carol Brainerd, the conference chair, asked if anyone was interested in forming some kind of a hospice nursing group. On the last day 30 people showed up on the patio with $25 checks to get things started." said Dorothy Caruso-Herman, first president of the board, 1987-1989, JHPN, vol. 3, no. 4, October-December 2001.
Over the next 6 months, 65 founding members donated funds to establish a financial base to plan the organization. On November 7, 1986, bylaws for the organization were approved by the general membership. Election of the first Board of Directors took place in January 1987. The board's first meeting was held in Berkeley, CA, on April 26, 1987. The fan was selected as the official logo.
These first boards did all of the work of the association: incorporation papers filed; FANFARE Newsletter written, printed, and mailed; membership fees collected; and rosters maintained.
