Selecting a wound dressing from more than 2000 wound care products on the market for your patient can be a bit overwhelming. The following are important factors to consider when determining which product is appropriate for a given wound care patient:
Clinicians should be familiar with a product's advantages and disadvantages before using it on a patient. Knowing the major categories of skin and wound care products and their actions, indications, contraindications, advantages, and disadvantages will assist in the selection of the most appropriate dressing (Table 1).
Each product's available forms and its applications must also be considered. In many cases, a single product can meet multiple therapeutic goals. For example, moist dressings can support wound healing and facilitate debridement.
