Clinicians should be familiar with a product's advantages and disadvantages before using it on a patient. Knowing the major categories of skin and wound care products and their actions, indications, contraindications, advantages, and disadvantages will assist in the selection of the most appropriate dressing (Table 1).
Each product's available forms and its applications must also be considered. In many cases, a single product can meet multiple therapeutic goals. For example, moist dressings can support wound healing and facilitate debridement.
