Aims: We document our prospective case series of Mycoplasma infection related parainfectious neurological manifestations and review the literature in pediatric population.
Methods: We describe the clinical presentation, disease progression, diagnosis and outcome of five children who presented with Mycoplasma associated neurological manifestations highlighting the role of immune modulation therapy in this patient population.
Results: We observed five children with varying neurological manifestations documented to have mycoplasma seropositivity during 2013 (January to December). All were treated with azithromycin for 7 days. 4/5 children had varied para-infectious neurological manifestations and one had presented as acute meningoencephalitis. 3/5 children received immune modulator therapy. 4/5 children had complete neurological recovery at the end of 3 months follow up except the one presented with myasthenia gravis.
Conclusions: This case series reiterate that Mycoplasma related neurological involvement is not uncommon and it is not a rule to have preceding or coexisting upper respiratory infection. Further studies would help us not only in the better understanding of the pathogenesis but also to find better therapeutic strategies and diagnostic modalities.
