Francis Giles, MD, Deputy Director of the Cancer Therapy & Research Center (CTRC) at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio has been awarded the 2008 Chairman's Citation for Excellence in Community Service by the South Texas Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Dr. Giles was recognized for his leadership and contributions to the cure of leukemia and allied blood disorders as well as his recent involvement in the 2nd annual Texas Forum on Blood Cancers.
Also at the CTRC, Isam Abdel-Karim, MD, Andrew Brenner, MD, PhD, and Yubao Wang, MD, PhD, have joined the staff as medical oncologists and clinical investigators, as well as Assistant Professors in the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology in the School of Medicine at the UT Health Science Center.
Two faculty members from the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio's School of Nursing have been named fellows in the American Academy of Nursing. Mickey Parsons, PhD, MHA, RN, Associate Professor in the Department of Acute Nursing Care, and Joseph O. Schmelz, PhD, RN, CIP, Director of the Health Science Center's Institutional Review Board and Associate Professor of Research in the Department of Acute Nursing Care, will be inducted into the academy in November.
The International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) and the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) have named Heine H. Hansen, MD, PhD, as the first recipient of the IASLC-ESMO Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to medical science. The award was given at the First European Lung Cancer Conference, held earlier this year in Geneva. Dr. Hansen is a pioneer in the new drug development arena, dedicating over 25 years to research against lung cancer.
Joel H. Saltz, MD, PhD, has been named Director of the Center for Comprehensive Informatics at Emory University's Woodruff Health Sciences Center and Chief Medical Information Officer of Emory Healthcare. Dr. Saltz, who will start his new appointment in September, comes to Emory from Ohio State University where he was Professor and Chair of the Department of Biomedical Informatics and Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering.
Three surgical oncology specialists in urology have joined the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute at Ohio State University: Ahmad Shabsigh, MD, David Sharp, MD, and Ronney Abaza, MD, who will be Director of Robotic Urology Surgery.

Baris Suzek, MS, Research Associate in Biochemistry and Molecular & Cellular Biology at Georgetown University Medical Center, has received the 2008 Outstanding Achievement Award by the Cancer Bioinformatics Grid (caBIG), a national informational network that enables cancer researchers to access a collection of clinical data across research institutions. Mr. Suzek, associate lead for the bioinformatics team for protein information resource at Georgetown, also received two additional awards for his contributions: the caBIG 2008 Change Agent Award and the caBIG 2008 Teamwork Award.
