Does a Mismatch Between School Children and Their Furniture Lead to Musculoskeletal Pain?
Excerpt
Researchers from the University of Cincinnati recently explored the intriguing hypothesis that low back pain among U.S. school children might reflect a mismatch between the size of the students and the dimensions of their furniture. The results are surprising in terms of traditional ergonomic thinking—but not completely unexpected in light of recent back pain research among children and adolescents.
J.M. Brewer, PhD, and colleagues examined the relationship of ergonomic mismatch and musculoskeletal pain in a group of 139 school children in a midwestern school district. They collected information on pain and discomfort, furniture dimensions, anthropometric measurements, and demographic issues. (See Brewer et al., 2009.
